Type 99 Engine and Spares
The Type 99 MBT is powered by a turbocharged diesel engine, developing 1500 horsepower. This engine is based on the German MTU 871 Ka-501 technology.
Type 99 Engine
The Type 99A is powered by a 1500 hp diesel engine called the 150HB. Its speculated that the engine is derived from the German MT883 diesel engine that is part of the Euro Power Pack. The Type 99A features a new automatic transmission and uses torsion bar suspension.

MBT 2000 Variants
- Type 90-IIA
Type 90-IIA was an export model offered to Pakistan. It was powered by French diesel engine, developing 1 500 hp. It did not enter service because France joined embargo of Pakistan for its nuclear tests.
- Type 90-IIM or MBT-2000
Type 90-IIM or MBT-2000 also was an export model aimed to meet Pakistani armed forces requirement. This version was developed to avoid the problem of embargo. Initially it was fitted with Chinese-made engine, which proved to be unreliable. In 2001 this MBT was demonstrated and was still proposed with an option to be fitted with foreign-made powerpack.
- Al Khalid
Al Khalid is a further development of the MBT-2000 with some modifications. It is powered by an Ukrainian 6TD diesel engine, developing 1 200 hp. Pakistan acquired license to produce these tanks locally.
